What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is the bumpy, lumpy texture on your skin. It is most commonly found in the thigh and buttocks area; and, unfortunately, it is more common in women than it is in men. Approximately 90% of women between the ages of 25-60 experience it, while only 10% of men are affected.
Although cellulite appears on the surface of your skin, it is a structural issue that cannot be fixed with topographic creams or lotions. It forms when the fibrous bands that connect your skin to the underlying muscle fascia tighten and pull down your skin, creating bulges and waves.
what causes cellulite?
The exact cause of cellulite is unknown, but many experts agree that genetics, weight loss, a sedentary or stressful lifestyle, and hormones/hormonal contraceptives are all factors. It also gets worse during times of high estrogen, especially for women after puberty.
Beneath the skin is a natural layer of fat and connective fibrous bands called ‘septae.’ When there is irregular tension on these bands, it causes the fat surrounding them to bulge. This is what creates the dimples, puckers, and dents in your skin. Usually cellulite begins to appear on girls during puberty, and can get worse with age or weight gain.
Who gets Cellulite?
- Women! Around 90% of women have cellulite while only 10% of men have it.
- It worsens during times of high estrogen, including pregnancy, nursing and chronic use of oral contraceptives.
- Weight gain and obesity can also make it look worse.
Can you get rid of cellulite?
It is frustrating to be dieting and exercising and still seeing your cellulite. Unfortunately, weight is not a determining factor. In fact, many experts believe that hormones and genetics are significant factors in its formation. It is not a superficial issue; the fundamental cause is under your skin. Exercising and dieting, while good for you, is not going to make your legs smooth. Many women who lose weight often see their cellulite getting worse, due to skin laxity.
